Professor Gillett was educated at Sydney University and did postgraduate training in England before taking up an academic post in Melbourne, which he held until 1971. He then returned as Head of the Surgical Department at Concord Hospital, a position which he still holds. He was responsible for developing the Breast Services at Concord Hospital and developing a nationally recognised Breast Centre at Strathfield.
Professor Gillett has always been involved in the management of Breast Diseases and in particular the management of Breast Cancer. He has run the Breast Diseases Service at Concord Hospital since 1971, and has been involved in the Central and Western Screening projects extensively. Since 1989 he has been principal of The Strathfield Breast Centre which is a multidisciplinary clinic dedicated to investigation and management of breast disease.
