Lady Killer Campaign
In June 2004, the Cancer Institute NSW and the NSW Department of Health implemented the Lady Killer - why risk it? Campaign. The campaign aimed at heightening women’s awareness of gender specific health risks such as reduced fertility, menstrual problems and difficulties with pregnancy and childbirthThe campaign targeted women aged 20-39. The television commercials conveyed a true story about "Jenny", a 42-year-old woman who had terminal lung cancer as a result of smoking. Jenny shared her life story about smoking and its tragic results.
She began smoking when she was 14 years old and continued to smoke on and off until she was 37. Jenny went to her doctor with shoulder pain and after further investigations was found to have lung cancer. Her message to women who smoke was simple: “Quit now - don’t wait for a warning sign…you might not get one.”
