The cancer journey

Cancer touches us all. With the current lifetime risk of being diagnosed with cancer at one in two for men and one in three for women, most people have a story to tell about a loved one, a friend, a colleague or their personal cancer journey.

In ourIn our own cancer journey, we are dedicated to working alongside doctors, nurses, researchers, policy makers, funders, academics, patients, carers and survivors; giving them the tools and information they need to control and cure cancer in New South Wales.

We give advice and information about preventing cancer; manage services for early detection screening programs; fund cancer nurses and doctors; fund researchers and set new agendas for research priorities; and report data about cancer in NSW to inform future policy and health planning

Cancer is now the largest cause of disease in Australia, surpassing cardiovascular disease. In 2007, 361,041 people were diagnosed with cancer in NSW and 13,241 died from the disease. Based on current trends, it is projected there will be over 30 per cent more cases of cancer in the next 10 years.

.A cure for cancer has never been more urgent for the people of NSW than it is today.

The Cancer Institute NSW Annual Report 2009 details our achievements and progress in the control of cancer over the financial year and our goal to find a cure for the many cancers that affect the NSW community.

In 2008–09:

The Public Health (Tobacco) Bill, protecting children and young people from tobacco, became law on 1 July 2009.
We established a state-of-the-art digital reading room for BreastScreen NSW.
The first Academic Chair in Cancer Nursing for NSW was appointed.
We introduced a new grant scheme – the Future Research Leaders – to attract up-and-coming high calibre researchers to NSW.
We conducted our first staff satisfaction survey.
We successfully launched a reward and recognition program among staff.
